Brahmastra has been in the making for the past seven years. Ranbir and Alia starrer has released today in multiple languages. Let's see if it lives up to the hype.

Storyline

Shiva(Ranbir Kapoor) is a DJ with a cosmic connection to fire. He continues to have dreams about Astra being chased by the dreaded gang. On the other hand, Junoon (Mouni Roy) is the one who is looking for a part of a ring that can end the world by combining with the other two parts. Does this Astraverse also have anything to do with Shiva's life? What is the back story? Who is Shiva? How does he save the world? and where are Alia Bhatt, Nagarjuna and Amitabh Bachchan in this set up? Watch the movie on big screens to know the answers.

The combination of different Astras and turning into a story seems quite interesting. Ayan Mukherjee's basic concept is good and set in an interesting backdrop. The creators have spent a lot of money and it shows on the screen.

Ranbir Kapoor is the mainstay and he gives life to his role as someone with special powers. Ranbir was excellent in the climax of the film. Alia Bhatt gives him ample support throughout the film and their chemistry looks great.

Nagarjuna has a small but important role and he does well. He takes center stage during the interval point and captures the screen well. Mouni Roy gets the meatiest part and is excellent as the main villain. He takes advantage of this huge opportunity and manages the big stars as the opposition.

Compared to the first part, the second half is well directed by Ayan Mukherjee. The climax has good thrills and the VFX seen are also decent. Finally, it was good to see Shah Rukh Khan in a cameo.

VFX

The main concern with the film is the overkill of the VFX. There are so many VFX scenes that look alike and bore you after a while. The VFX done in the first half looks tacky.

More focus is on Alia and Ranbir's romance which has no impact and bores the audience. The director takes forever to get into the main story. Also, his explanation of the Astraverse is unclear. It takes time for the normal viewer to understand what the movie is actually about.

The film is quite long and needs to be edited immediately. Also, the action blocks don't seem real after a while. Excessive graphics and flying in the air spoil the fun of the audience.

Since the second half is packed with so much about the Astras and their universe, the audience feels overwhelmed. The screen work is another letdown as it doesn't hold your attention. Amitabh Bachchan's role is not very effective for the narrative.

A lot of money was spent on this movie and it shows visually. Pritam's music is pretty good but BGM by Simon is loud as hell. The VFX seen only work in parts. The camera department is handled by different people and since the film has been shot for a long time now, there are some scenes that look old. The production design isn't great and so was the editing.

As for director Ayan Mukherjee, he has only made biopics so far and this project is quite ambitious for him. His story idea and idea of creating an Indian Astraverse is good on paper. But when it comes to execution, he misses the bus. The film lacks any emotional depth and that's where it falls flat.

As Ayan goes for the whole VFX part, his script becomes bland and he narrates the film casually. The movie looks great when it talks about the Astras and their universe. But the romance, the action and the use of the characters are wrong to make this movie a lousy ride.

Overall

All in all, Brahmastra is a passable action drama with an interesting backdrop. The appreciation of the astras and their universe seems interesting, but the narration is random. The love story is boring and the VFX are over the top. However, the film has intriguing moments for the audience due to its storyline and grandeur. As the film is associated with Rajamouli's name, the film will find takers in Telugu, but the rest depends on word of mouth.
