Tamil actor Arya is very familiar to Telugu audience through several films. Now he has come out with a science fiction film called "Captain". The film was released today. Let's see how it is.

Storyline

Vijay Kumar, an orphan from Amaravati, is serving as a captain in the Indian Army. His team is the most important thing to him and he considers them his family. The Government of India decides to reactivate Sector 42 in the North East, which has remained idle for the last 50 years without any civil or military action. During the reconnaissance operation, several teams are killed. There is uncertainty as the cause of these deaths remains a mystery. Vijay Kumar and his team take on the task of solving this mystery. How do murders happen? Who is behind this? Did Vijay and team solve the mystery? This forms part of the rest of the film.

We've seen Arya deliver some compelling performances before. The actor repeats the same in "Captain". His transformation is amazing and he fits the role very well. He makes his mark with a sequence of moves. Arya is in almost every frame of the film and does full justice to it.

The makers should be commended for trying something big. Their vision is spectacular. Yesterday actress Simran played the role of a scientist and she was decent in it. Harish Uthaman, Kavya Shetty and others played their roles perfectly. There are scenes that are beautifully executed.

The audience will already be aware of Hollywood films on similar lines and the comparison will be clear here. The director made a mistake in coming up with a good and engaging story. What we see instead is a simple movie with completely ordinary scenes. There are no exciting scenes. Even if we don't compare it to any movie, the whole presentation looks terrible.

For any sci-fi movie, VFX should be good or at least decent to make more impact. Unfortunately, the visual effects here are very weak and look very strange on the big screen. The detail on the alien creature is amazing. When it comes to climax, the less said the better.

Aishwarya Lekshmi played the female lead, but she is hardly seen in the film. His role has no relevance to the chosen plot point and just adds to the length. Although it is decent to some extent, there is repetition in a few scenes.

The movie is very short, but we find it difficult to watch the movie because we already know what will happen next. Here the skill and mastery of the masters had to come into picture.

Unfortunately, this does not happen. BGM by Imman is terrific and pulse pounding. He did everything he could to save the film. The cinematography is okay. Production values are below par. The editing team had to make the film even better.

As far as director Soundar Rajan is concerned, he has taken a plot point that looks great on paper. But he could not make it to the big screen. His narration is not engaging because it is full of very ordinary scenes. When you're making a movie inspired by Hollywood greats, you expect the movie to be decent if it doesn't live up to them. In this regard, the director should have been more careful.

Overall

All in all, Captain is a poorly made sci-fi movie that is both entertaining and unengaging. Very good performances by Arya and others and some decent scenes here and there are its saving graces. Substandard VFX, unappealing screenplay, lack of interesting elements and poor execution make it a tedious watch. The attempt is commendable but the film does not live up to expectations. You can skip this movie and wait for another good movie this weekend.
