Episode Recap

Episode 10 of Chainsaw Man opens with Denji and Power sitting in the hospital waiting for Hayakawa to wake up from his bed. As they fight over the apple, Hayakawa asks who survived from the 4th division. Denji informs him that everyone except Himeno survived the excursion. Before leaving with Power to visit Makima, he leaves an apple for Hayakawa.

Hayakawa unsheaths his sword and asks the Cursed Devil how many years he has left. Satan tells him that he has two years left. Hayakawa tries to light a cigarette, but it reportedly gets mixed up. Meanwhile, Denji hears Hayakawa crying behind the door and wonders why she isn't crying over Himeno's death. Denji admits that he wouldn't be upset if Makima, Hayakawa, or Power died. He would feel terrible about Makima, but he can move on with his life.

Denji and Power exit the hospital as Kurose and Tendo enter Hayakawa's room. They inform Hayakawa that Makima has appointed them as his advisers and introduce themselves to him. Meanwhile, Denji and Power meet up with Makima at the graveyard. Makima introduces Denji and the Force to someone who will train them. The person asks Denji and Power if they feel terrible when their teammates die, if they want revenge, and if they side with humans or demons.

Power and Denji give the man honest but brutal answers. The man says they are passing and asks Makima to leave as he wants to start his training in the graveyard. Makima leaves. The man reveals that he is a first division Demon Hunter, wants to be called a master, and adores alcohol, women, and killing demons. Master grabs Denji and Power and squeezes them before throwing them to the ground. Master tells them that the bone structure is similar to humans.

He knows that Power and Denji will be cured by drinking blood. Blood pours into their mouths. Denji and Power recover and ask why he's being so hard on them. The master says that Makima informed him that the Weapon Demon is behind Denji's heart. He feels that Makima is concerned for Denji's safety as he wants her to train Denji and the Force. He also says that this is his first time training demons and admits that he is the strongest Demon Hunter. He plans to hunt him down until he can defeat Denji and Power.

Uses Master Power and Demon Hunter abilities to make Denji work fast. Based on their exchange, he confirms Denji's immortality and his Power is semi-immortal. As Denji and Power lie in a pool of blood, the Master promises to make them the best Devil Hunters. At the hospital, Hayakawa tries to summon the Fox Demon, but it does not respond to his summons. Kurose tells Hayakawa that the Fox Demon may no longer listen to him for abusing his powers.

Tendo informs Hayakawa that they are here to conduct career training for people like Hayakawa who work in a special division. Tendo says that if Hayakawa plans to continue working for the agency as a Demon Hunter, he should make a contract with a more powerful demon who can contribute to the special unit. Hayakawa informs Tendo and Kurose that he does not plan to quit. Tendo and Kurose leave and promise to stay until tomorrow to give Hayakawa some documents.

A mysterious woman arrives to greet Hayakawa, who is stunned by his appearance. Back at the cemetery, Master tells Power and Denji that he will stop the night hunt. He promises to visit them tomorrow for more practice. The master leaves. Power sees that Denji has completely lost his mind. She gives him some meaning when he asks how many times he's died today. Power states that he was killed 20 times and that when he died, the woman was unconscious.

Denji and Power go home and are not fans of the Master's training regimen. Power suggests that they try to fight the Master while using their brains since he's a drunk with an alcohol addiction. The next day, Master is ambushed by Power and Denji, who come up with a brilliant plan to defeat him. The force distracts him with blood, giving Denji a chance to attack him from behind with his axe. Unfortunately, Master becomes the windfall of this strategy.

He knocks Denji down. The Master explains to him the reasons for their defeat. He says that his Power uses a lot of blood when fighting and Denji can't predict his attacks. Master leaves to get more drinks. Denji informs Power that they are off work for the day as the Master drops a knife on his head out of nowhere. Denji is confused as the Master says that the hunt should not trust the hunter. Meanwhile, Tendo and Kurose take Hayakawa to a revealed prison so he can make a deal with a more powerful demon.

As they walk past the cells of the locked demons, Kurose asks Hayakawa to choose his weapon. Hayakawa reveals that the girl who visited him is his teammate's (Himeno) sister. He says that he came to her room to deliver the letters. In a flashback, the girl gives Hayakawa Himeno's letters. He learns that Himeno's father is ill and that Hayakawa is trying to quit. In the present, they reach cell 108 as Kurose tells Hayakawa that they want him to make a deal with the devil inside.

His name is Future Devil. Kurose made deals with two other public safety officers, as he explained what they had to sacrifice to get their help. Hayakawa enters the room as Kurose locks him inside. The episode ends with Future Devil staring at him menacingly with his visible eye.

Episode Review

The main focus of this chapter is to prepare our heroes for the fight against the Gun Devil and his friends. It also touches on the themes of sadness and grief that Himeno's death left in Hayakawa's mind. Sadness aside, this episode introduces us to Denji and his teacher nicknamed the Master of Power. The Master's character evokes the same sense of mystery and power as Makima.

He declares himself to be the most powerful Devil Hunter in public security and demonstrates his power in front of our heroes. Power and Denji hatch a plan to capture the drunken man, but their efforts fail. This episode shares some tidbits about the Master's youth, but doesn't go into much depth with it.

Hopefully, future episodes can shed some light on this shadowy figure, as fans may wonder how he got to this level of experience and skill. Meanwhile, I couldn't help but feel bad for Hayakawa's character this week. He and Himeno had a close relationship from what we could tell in the few flashbacks in previous chapters. It must be hard for him to move forward with the Fox Devil leaving him.

Fans can only wish Hayakawa the best as he faces Future Devil. I'm intrigued by his fearsome demeanor and can't wait to see what abilities this creature bestows on Hayakawa. Overall, this was a fun episode of Chainsaw Man. It proves that our heroes aren't ready to fight the Weapon Demon and I'm glad we get to see their training regimens. I'm excited to see how Chainsaw Man concludes this season, as I'm sure there will be another season in the pipeline
