Season 2 Review

It's great to throw them out right before an intense workout, but some quotes resonate more than others — and of course, this will vary from person to person. When it comes to adversity, how we deal with setbacks and defeats really separates the men from the boys. As they say, pressure makes a diamond. And perhaps there is no greater pressure for these young men than community college basketball.

The first season did a great job of continuing the usual Last Chance U vibes, but was unfortunately cut short due to a certain worldwide pandemic. However, Season 2 returns with a bang as Coach John Mosley returns with a new group of young men intent on ringing them up and winning the State Championship. With fly-on-the-wall cameras and 8 episodes clocking in at just over an hour each, Last Chance U captures every ups and downs these kids face along the way.

Unlike the first season, where everything here feels closer to the forlorn hope seen in something like Sunderland Til I Die, the team struggles to find an identity and click together. Losses are trickling in, complacency is ready to strike at any moment, and John begins to doubt himself. Everything is about to explode like never before.

Second Half

The second half of the season varies in tone and feel, but that underlying layer of tension runs throughout each game, beautifully shot and edited together.

The show once again captures the essence of these young people's experiences, including personal stories, interviews with family and friends, and executive interviews that tell apart the action on and off the basketball court. John Mosley is still the glue that holds it all together, and his fiery motivational talks and speeches are sometimes irritating.

The soundtrack also rocks on this one, and every song feels like it was chosen on purpose. After discussing Mosley's training style in episode 4, we get the song "Method to the Madness". The final song in episode 8 is also another seasonal bonus, but I'm not going to spoil what's going on here!

Characters

The collection of characters this time around is just as enigmatic and compelling as last year's, and there are changes to the staff team as well, including Rob joining the ranks and acting as an assistant coach. There have been a number of highlights this year with this group, including a particularly nail-biting match at the end of episode 7 and the truth that reveals why one player has such a hard time focusing and following the Coach's instructions.

A mix of drama and suspense combine with heartfelt storytelling to create a truly engaging docu-series. Whether you are a basketball fan or not, this series is a must watch.
